In late 2012 I was in the middle of a very stressful transition to a new job in a new city. We were staying with friends yet had been unable to find our own home. I was at my wits end, half of my family in the old house, me staying with friends four hours away, and no prospects of a home of our own on the horizon.
One night I sat down on the edge of the bed and began sobbing. I had never felt so hopeless. I thought I would never have all of my family under one roof again. Suddenly, a skeletal figure in a glowing white robe appeared as if she had just stepped through the wall, and then glided over to me. She sat down beside me, and as she did, she wrapped her cloak around my shoulders. I was overcome with a deep peace and the faith that everything would work out. Just as quickly as she had appeared, she was gone. I never felt scared, I just wasn’t sure who she was, and why she had come to me.
Shortly after that we found the perfect home. Later, I started searching everywhere online and found the name Santa Muerte. Being a white woman from the Deep South of the US, I didn’t even know how to pronounce her name. Unfortunately, everything I found was in Spanish. That is until I came across Dr. Chesnut’s book.
Finally I had validation that what I saw was a real entity. So much so, that a scholar had taken time to research and publish a book on her. Reading in the book that she had many followers of many different backgrounds helped me understand my experience. Dr. Chesnut’s book started me on a path that I am still on today. I’ve been through some charlatan “teachers,” read some erroneous books, experienced much trial and error, but through it all I am still devoted to Death.
